Candidate will provide clients with culturally aware, evidence-based individual and support group counseling.

SERVICE AREA: James City, York, New Kent, Charles City, Poquoson, Williamsburg, Gloucester, Mathews, King William, King & Queen, Middlesex. OFFICE LOCATION: James City County

Avalon Center is committed to providing safety, advocacy, and support to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. We operate with professionalism, confidentiality, and a trauma-informed approach.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (Additional duties may be designated by Program Director)

  • Provide individual and group counseling services to survivors/clients in both in-person and virtual settings, utilizing trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and culturally responsive approaches that promote safety, empowerment, and healing.
  • Deliver timely, compassionate, and trauma-informed crisis intervention services that prioritize emotional and physical safety, stabilization, and client autonomy.
  • Provide accurate, comprehensive information and referrals to community resources, ensuring accessibility and coordination of care.
  • Conduct follow-up outreach with helpline callers, as appropriate, to reinforce safety planning, offer continued support, and assess evolving needs. Assist with Hospital Accompaniment Program, as needed.
  • Research best practices for counseling services for survivors/clients.
  • Collaborate with internal staff and external partner agencies to strengthen coordinated community response efforts and, when appropriate, deliver educational presentations or trainings to increase community awareness and cross-system collaboration.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and thorough documentation of services provided, including, reports, correspondence, and required grant-related data entry, in accordance with agency standards and funding requirements.
  • Adherence to Avalon’s client and data input/information confidentiality policy
  • Demonstrate cultural humility and responsiveness when working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences.
  • Contribute actively to a positive, respectful, and collaborative team environment that supports high-quality, trauma-informed service delivery and healthy workplace culture.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and reflective supervision to strengthen clinical skills, prevent vicarious trauma, and support personal wellness.

PREPARATION

  • Master’s Degree in social work or counseling required.
  • 2 years counseling experience, DV/SV strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of domestic and sexual violence dynamics preferred
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with victims, staff and the public.
  • Able to work independently and as a team member.
  • Strong organizational, computer, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment/annual criminal history review.
  • Variable schedule, weekend and evening hour availability required.
  • LPC licensure supervision available.
