JOB TITLE: Youth Counselor: PT (20 hrs weekly)

REPORTS TO: Director of Youth Services

POSITION SUMMARY: The Counselor will provide direct, trauma-informed services to youth and children who are primary or secondary survivors of domestic or sexual violence, bullying or trafficking. Services include culturally aware, evidence-based individual and support group counseling, crisis intervention, and assist with educational/awareness presentations and groups.

SERVICE AREA: Greater Williamsburg and Middle Peninsula communities

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (Additional duties may be designated by Program Director)

  • Provides prompt, trauma informed crisis intervention to survivors on-site and in the community.
  • Complete intake and maintain case management.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions with survivors as assigned.
  • Conduct educational presentations and groups.
  • Generate and maintain service provision documentation, letters and reports.
  • Resource research and compilation.
  • Provide survivors with information and referral.
  • Coordinate comprehensive services with mental health providers, case managers and partner agencies.
  • Follow-up with 24-Hour helpline callers as needed.
  • Research best practices for counseling services for survivors.
  • Organizes and facilitates therapeutic and educational groups/activities for children and youth.
  • Presentations and representation with partner agencies.
  • Provide crisis response to survivors and incidents as assigned.
  • Adherence to Avalon’s client and data input/information confidentiality policy
  • Actively contribute to a positive team environment to ensure collaboration required for high quality services to victims and effective working relationships.

PREPARATION

  • Master’s Degree in social work or counseling required.
  • 2 years counseling experience, DV/SV strongly preferred.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with victims, staff and the public.
  • Strong organizational, computer (Microsoft Office Suite), verbal and written communication skills.
  • Enjoy working independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Enjoys public speaking.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment/annual criminal history review.
  • Valid Virginia driver’s license, acceptable driving record and proof of insurance.
  • Variable schedule, evening and weekend hour availability may be occasionally required.
  • Ability to travel among various work sites.
